Seeing beyond performance… How do we get under the skin of performance to unveil the process within and in doing so, do we open up better conversations about the problems we are trying to solve and the gaps we are trying to bridge?
Does an S&C Coach have ownership over, and accountability for the performance outcome? Practitioners and support staff focusing on the result may well find it difficult to articulate their contribution and objectively demonstrate impact. There is something concerning about this, when there is a lack of clarity on what a practitioner is doing and why, this should lead to some challenging conversations and yet, all too often, there does seem to be confusion about role purpose, lack of clarity in role function and a lack of appetite to objectively measure within or across the process. A disappointing truth about the state of Performance Sport and how MDT process functions or an indictment of our practitioners and their ability to deliver their expertise and craft opting instead for the easy and essentially less challenging path?
Redirecting the emphasis towards the process of support both within and collectively across disciplines can liberate practitioners. Accountable for the support process, ownership for their individual and collective interventions and evidenced through discipline specific measures, can we begin to better understand the support structure and assess more meaningfully its contribution?
