Interactive Complexity and Tight Coupling: a recipe for failure in performance support

System construction in Problem Solving and Decision Making Design

Performance Support Teams working within complex systems and through defined processes that are (1) highly integrated, (2) have inherent dependency (both implicit and explicit) and (3), are challenging to objectively measure, may well make injury, rehab, physical development and performance particularly difficult to define.

Normal Accident Theory offers a novel lens from which to unravel the performance support conundrum.

In identifying the critical functions of the PST and establishing the complexity/coupling interactions, the team can work to simplify and add slack to the interactions between ‘systems’, identified interventions and in doing so, better understand outcomes and effects.
